2nd Grade Parent Update
Week of January 30 - February 3
Thank you to everyone who made it to our Catholic Schools Week Mass yesterday! Your presence and participation were much appreciated. 
Announcements for this Week:
Catholic Schools Week
This week is Catholic Schools Week - a celebration of faith-centered education! Our celebration of “Faith, Academics, and Service” will continue throughout the week with several special events, including a Parent Meeting and Open House on Thursday, February 2 and our annual Mardi Gras night on Saturday, February 4. Please review the attached schedule for more details about the special events occurring this week. As always, feel free to email me with questions or concerns.
Catholic Schools Week Service Project
As part of our celebration of “Catholic Schools Week: Faith, Academics, Service”, we will be participating in a service project to support a very worthy cause - Alexandria House, a transitional residence for women and children in need. 
Each class at St. Jerome will be assigned items to donate to these families, and students will assemble care packages to be delivered by CJSF representatives. 
Thank you to those who have already donated diapers, wipes, and snacks.

Looking Ahead:
Benchmark Testing
I will be administering the mid-year Benchmark Test during the week of February 6. Please avoid scheduling appointments during this week and make every effort to ensure that students arrive at school on time. 
Special School Mass
There will be a school Mass on Friday, February 10 at 11:00 AM hosted by the 3rd grade. This special Black History Month Mass will honor African-American leaders in the Catholic Church.
e-Waste Collection
On Sunday, February 12, St. Jerome Parish will be hosting an e-Waste collection from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM. Bring your old electronics to dispose of properly and model good stewardship of our planet for your child. 
Hawaii Raffle Tickets
Kids, keep selling your Hawaii Raffle tickets to family, friends, and neighbors! Students have the opportunity to earn non-uniform dress days each Thursday and a chance to win free movie tickets! Tickets are due by Friday, February 17..
Presidents’ Day Holiday
There will be NO SCHOOL on Monday, February 20 in honor of Presidents’ Day.

Thank you to all of our Career Day speakers! The presentations were fantastic!
January Awards Assembly
The Awards Assembly for the month of January will be on Thursday, January 26 in the Front Yard. The Virtue Awards winners for this month will be honored. This month’s virtue is: Citizenship. Students are encouraged to be responsible citizens of their school, neighborhood, and country by participating in service, following rules and laws, and being active members of the community.

Announcements for this Week:
Career Day
Our Second Grade Career Day will take place on Friday, January 20 after Mass. Thank you so much to all of the parents and family members who volunteered to speak with the class about their professions! We are excited to hear from you!

Looking Ahead:
Work Party at St. Jerome School
If you are able to volunteer for a few hours this weekend, St. Jerome is hosting a Work Party on Saturday, January 21. Help us out and show your Spartan pride!
Career Interviews and Reports
Career Reports will be DUE on Monday, January 23. Students will be working on drafts of their written reports in class this week. When they finish, they will bring their work home for proofreading and revising. Final copies should be turned in with their first drafts and visual aids on Monday.

Attention Parents!

This Thursday, January 12, is our next Student Council fundraiser. Students may participate in the following ways:

1) "Support Your Team" Theme Dollar Dayz - Students may choose to wear a sports-themed T-shirt, jersey, or accessories. $1 for tops, bottoms, OR accessories. $2 for any combination or all three!

2) "Recycling Drive - Students may bring bags of recyclables to their line-up areas before school and leave them outside for Student Council to collect.

Our class earns Spirit Points for every can or bottle collected as well as for participating in the dress-up Dollar Dayz. Keep up the good work, 2nd Grade, and show your SJS pride!

Announcements for this Week:
Career Interviews and Reports
Students will be receiving information today about our next “long-term” project - Career Interviews and Research Reports. This project will supplement our in-class study of community and economics. Students will be asked to interview a family member or family friend with an interesting career and create a report that explains and evaluates the profession. Interviews should be completed by Tuesday, January 17 as we will be working on the writing process in class. Reports will be due on Monday, January 23.
Career Day
In addition to the Career Reports, I would also like to invite you to help us build our understanding of careers, economics, and community by participating in our Second Grade Career Day! I am seeking parents and family members who would be willing to spend about 15 - 20 minutes speaking to the class about their jobs. Please complete and return the attached handout if you are able to participate in our Career Day on Friday, January 20 between 9:30 AM - 12:00 PM.
Looking Ahead:
Martin Luther King, Jr. Day
There will be NO SCHOOL on Monday, January 16 as we join the community in remembering the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. I highly recommend celebrating by attending the annual Kingdom Day Parade. The parade begins at 11:00 AM at MLK Blvd. and Western Ave. and will continue west on MLK and south on Crenshaw Blvd., ending with a festival at Leimert Park. The California African American Museum in Exposition Park is also sponsoring a special program in honor of Dr. King. It will be held on Sunday, January 15 at 1:00 PM.
Second Trimester Progress Reports
Progress reports for the second trimester will be distributed on Tuesday, January 17 for students who may require extra support in a particular subject area. Remember - you can always use your login information to access Gradelink if you would like to check on your child’s progress in between grading periods.
Gateway to Art
Our next Gateway to Art session will be on Tuesday, January 17 at 1:30 PM. Please contact our docent, Mrs. Adela Rogers, if you are able to volunteer!

Announcements for this Week:
Feast of the Epiphany
There will be a special school Mass this Friday, January 6 at 11:00 AM. The Mass will be sponsored by the 6th grade (our “buddy” class) in honor of Epiphany.
Looking Ahead:
