Week of November 1 - 5

Announcements for this Week:

Halloween Festivities
I hope all of the students enjoyed a safe and happy Halloween weekend! I know we all had a wonderful time at our school celebration on Friday. I want to extend my personal thanks to all of the parents who donated treats, refreshments, supplies, and decorations, as well as those of you who dedicated your time to preparing treat bags, decorating the classroom, and helping out at the party. I feel particularly grateful to our devoted and hardworking Room Parents, Mrs. Daniels, Mrs. Jackson, and Mrs. Antoine, for planning and organizing such a memorable celebration. I hope the students will always look back fondly on our "Great Pumpkin" party. I know that my first Halloween at St. Jerome was truly unforgettable!

All Saints' Day Mass
We will have a Special School Mass on Monday, November 1 at 8:00 AM in honor of the Feast of All Saints. Please be sure that students arrive at school at 7:45 AM on Monday so that we may store our backpacks in the classroom and arrive at Mass in a timely fashion. Since we will be celebrating Mass together on Monday, there will be no school Mass this Friday, November 5.

A Quick Note about Math
As I reviewed our weekly Math quiz this weekend, I noticed that quite a few students had problems with understanding a specific concept in place value. I plan to review this concept in class this week, but I am also sending home a review assignment for homework on Monday night. Please take a moment to make sure that your child understands the difference between the digit in a particular place and the value of that digit. For example, the number 52 has 5 tens and 2 ones. The digit in the tens place is 5. However, the value of the 5 is 50 because it is in the tens place and represents 5 groups of ten. If a problem asks, "how many tens does 51 have?", the correct answer would be 5. If a problem asks, "what is the value of 5 in 51?", the correct answer would be 50. Expanded form is a way to break down a number to show the value of each digit. The expanded form of 52 is 50 + 2 (the value of the tens digit + the value of the ones digit). If you would like more information, please check out the "Math" link on the sidebar of our blog and look for activities to supplement Chapter 2. One of the games featured is a great review of this topic and can be accessed here. Click on the game for Chapter 2 "Expanded Form".

Our Star of the Week is: Sandra Rosas

For more information on the exhibit, check out the Science Center's website at: http://www.californiasciencecenter.org/Exhibits/WorldOfEcology/WorldOfEcology.php

We also need donations of orange juice, milk, and $5 for doughnut purchases. Please help out however you can. Please refrain from scheduling appointments during the morning hours this week and make sure that students are arriving at school on time as testing will begin promptly at 8:00 am each morning. Please support me in encouraging students to try their best on each day of testing. My intention is not for the students to feel stressed or pressured to know everything on the test, but rather to use this opportunity to show what they know and how they think. Students should go into the test with a relaxed, confident attitude.

Feast of St. Jerome Mass
This Thursday, September 30, there will be a Special School Mass at 11:15am in honor of the Feast of St. Jerome. Please make sure that students wear their regular uniforms on this day (not P.E. uniforms). This Special Mass will take the place of our usual Friday Mass this week.

Week of September 13 - 17

Dear 2nd Grade Families,

I'm so glad I was able to see so many of you at Back to School Night! I know there was a lot of information presented to you on Wednesday night, so please remember that you can always check the blog archives to review any class policies, class schedule information, and assignments.

Here is the update for this week:

Picture Day is this Wednesday, September 15!
Please remember that school uniforms should be worn on Picture Day this year.

Simple Solutions
This math program provides an efficient means to review and build basic math skills with daily practice. The faculty feels that participation in this program will really help improve our standardized test scores. During math this week, I noticed that several students were struggling with some basic addition facts that should ideally be committed to memory such as doubles facts (4+4, 7+7, 9+9, etc.) and ways to make 10 (5+5, 3+7, 6+4, etc.). Hopefully, Simple Solutions will help facilitate comfort and automaticity with these basic computational skills. The program cost is only $12.95 per student. Please submit payment this week, and let's continue practicing at school and at home.

ITBS Testing
Testing will take place during the weeks of September 27 - October 8 in the mornings. Please be on time and make sure students are arriving at school well-rested and fed. Homework will be minimal during the weeks of ITBS Testing.

Tardies
At Friday's Faculty Meeting, I was surprised and a bit disappointed to find that our class has the most students arriving at school late. Let's work to improve our punctuality. Students should arrive at school and be in line on the back yard at 7:55am. We are in our classroom and starting work at 8:00am. When students arrive late, they need extra time to copy their homework assignments, store their backpacks and lunchboxes, and complete their morning work. Late arrivals compromise valuable instructional time and can be distracting to the rest of the class. I know the drop-off lines can be a bit backed up in the mornings, so please leave home a few minutes early if necessary. Thank you for your cooperation in this matter.

Week of August 30 - September 3

Dear Families,

What a great first week of school! I really enjoyed getting to know your children. They are an extremely bright, motivated, and productive group! It will be my goal to seek creative ways to support them and challenge them academically this year.

I have a few bits of important class news to share with you this week:

Blog
Our class blog is up and running. Please bookmark it and check in often. It can be accessed at: www.grade2sjs.blogspot.com
The blog will be updated frequently with class announcements, reminders, homework assignments, and spelling words. The homework assignments and spelling words for this week have already been posted. You may want to use this resource to make sure your child is copying assignments and spelling words accurately in the Homework Notebooks.

Physical Education
Our P.E. days are Tuesdays and Thursdays. Please make sure that your child wears their P.E. uniform on these days, including appropriate tennis shoes for exercise.

Mass Days
Our first School Mass of the year will take place this Friday, September 3. Please remember to arrive at school EARLY at 7:45 am on days that we will celebrate Mass together. This year, the whole school will come together for Mass every Friday. The only exceptions will be weeks during which we celebrate Special Masses or Holy Days of Obligation. These dates should be noted on the School Calendar and will be posted on the blog.

2nd Grade Class Policies

My name is Kimberly White, and I am very pleased to be joining the St. Jerome family this year as your child’s teacher. Making the transition to a new school always comes with challenges, but the faculty, staff, and families of St. Jerome have been both welcoming and supportive. I am very excited to be part of this community, and I am eager to get to know you and your children.

I can be contacted via email at whitesjs@gmail.com or after school by phone at (310) 670-1678. I am also available by appointment before or after school.

In addition to the school policies outlined in the St. Jerome School Policy Manual, there are a few items specific to our 2nd grade classroom of which you should be aware:

Homework Policy
Homework will be assigned Monday – Thursday. Students will be responsible for copying their assignments legibly into their Homework Notebooks. A Parent Signature is required nightly. Any comments, questions, or requests for conferences may also be communicated in the Homework Notebook. Students will also have a two-pocket folder dedicated to transporting their homework assignments between school and home.

Reading Logs
Students are expected to read independently at home for at least 15 minutes daily. A Reading Log will be provided monthly to help your child keep track of the books read. The Reading Logs should be kept in the student’s Homework Folder and will be collected monthly. I will also provide a list of suggested reading material for 2nd Graders.

Standards for Classroom Behavior
This year, St. Jerome School is celebrating the virtue of Respect. Students will be expected to behave respectfully in all of their school interactions. I will work with students during the first week of school to establish a set of standards for classroom behavior based on the theme of respect. These guidelines for behavior will include respect for others (using polite language, listening attentively, following directions given by an adult, and showing consideration for the physical space and property of others), respect for our environment (keeping our classroom, hallways, and playgrounds clean and safe), and respect for oneself (paying attention to class material, participating in class discussions, asking questions, completing assignments, and striving for excellence).

Care of Books and Materials
Students will be expected to come to school with the appropriate supplies each day. A copy of the class supply list can be found on the school website or in the office. Textbooks will be distributed to the students next week. Textbooks should be covered and transported in a book bag or backpack. Please be aware that covering textbooks will be required as part of the students’ homework next week. If you need to purchase book covers, please do so this weekend so the students can fulfill this responsibility next week.

Uniforms
The Uniform Policy as outlined in the St. Jerome School Policy Manual will be strictly enforced in the 2nd Grade as students are maturing into responsible young people who take pride in their appearance.

Birthdays
St. Jerome School Policy prohibits any food being distributed in the classrooms, so if you would like to celebrate your child’s birthday with the class, please do so by donating a book to our class library. A nameplate with the child’s name and the date will be placed inside the front cover and the student will be invited to read the book to the class.

Student of the Week
Each week a student will have a turn to be our Student of the Week. The student will be given a poster to decorate, fill out, and share with us on Friday. This is a great way to learn more about our classmates, build community, and develop oral language skills.

Weekly Mass
This year the whole school will celebrate Mass on Fridays at 8:00am. Please make sure that your child arrives at school EARLY (at 7:45am) on Fridays to avoid disrupting the Mass with late arrivals. Students will be considered TARDY if they do not arrive on time for Mass.

Don't forget! Back to School Night will be held on Wednesday, September 8 at 6:30pm. I look forward to seeing you all there!

Thank you again for the warm welcome and support!
