2nd Grade Parent Update
Week of April 30 - May 4
Announcements for this Week:
First Communion Preparation
Students will be practicing for First Holy Communion in the church this week, so please make every effort to ensure that students are present at school every day this week. Please arrive on time and avoid scheduling appointments this week.
There will be a special school assembly to honor the First Communicants on Thursday, May 3 at 8:00 AM on the Front Yard.
Gateway to Art
Our last Gateway to Art session of the school year will be on Thursday, May 3 at 1:45 PM in the Art Room. If you have not yet been able to attend, please consider taking advantage of this opportunity to volunteer in your child’s class in a really fun and interactive way. Please contact our docent, Mrs. Rogers, for more info!
Talent Showcase
The Talent Show will take place on Friday, May 4 at 7:00 PM in the Parish Hall! Rehearsals will be held on Thursday, May 3 from 3:00 - 5:00 PM.
First Holy Communion
Students will celebrate the sacrament of First Holy Communion this Sunday, May 6 at the 9:00 AM Mass. Students should arrive by 8:45 AM and meet in the vestibule at the entrance of the church. Any students in our class who are not Catholic are still welcome to join us to sing and support their classmates.
Looking Ahead:
May Crowning Mass
There will be a special school Mass on Friday, May 11 at 11:00 AM in honor of the May Crowning of Mary. Students are encouraged to bring flowers for Mary. The second graders will be participating in this Mass as the honor guard. They should dress in their First Communion attire or white dresses for the girls and white shirts and black slacks for the boys. Parents are invited to join us for Mass.
General Parent Meeting
The last parent meeting of the year will be held on Monday, May 15 at 6:30 PM in the Parish Hall. Come join us to hear our end-of-the-year announcements, make plans for the 2012-2013 school year, and meet our new principal, Mrs. Jones!
Activity Day
Everyone’s favorite school event, Activity Day, is coming up soon! Activity Day will take place on Friday, May 18. Please consider volunteering to lead a group or donating supplies or snacks to get a head start on your obligation for next year.

Announcements for this Week:
Third Trimester Progress Reports
Progress Reports will be distributed on Tuesday, April 24 for students who may require extra support in an academic content area. Please contact me if you have any questions or concerns about your child’s academic progress. 
First Communion Preparation
Parents of students preparing for their First Holy Communion will need to attend a meeting on the evening of Wednesday, April 25 at 7:15 PM in the Parish Hall.
Administrative Professionals Day
On Wednesday, April 25, we will honor the people who make sure our school runs smoothly from behind the scenes - Mrs. Migneault and Mrs. Cobbs. Children and families are encouraged to show their appreciation with a card or small gift.
Superhero Dollar Dayz
Student Council is sponsoring another Dollar Day on Thursday, April 26. Students will be permitted to dress up in superhero costumes or T-shirts- complete with capes and masks! (Masks will need to be taken off during class.) The cost is $2.00 or, in honor of Earth Day, 20 recyclable cans and bottles!

First Communion Banners

Yesterday, the First Communicants received the materials for their family banners. I am re-posting the information about banners and a few examples in case anyone has any questions about the design requirements. Please disregard the timeline on the instructions. Banners should be completed by the First Communion Parent Meeting on Wednesday, April 25.

Gateway to Art
Our make-up Gateway to Art session will take place on Thursday, April 19 at 1:45 PM in the Art Room. Please contact Mrs. Rogers if you are able to help!
An Elegant Night on the Nile
The 2012 St. Jerome Gala, “An Elegant Night on the Nile”, will take place at the Crowne Plaza on the evening of Saturday, April 21 from 6:00 PM to 1:00 AM. Please contact Mrs. Cobbs for more information.

Second graders are studying the Sacrament of the Eucharist in Religion class, and many of them will be preparing for their First Holy Communion over the next several weeks. First Communion will be celebrated on Sunday, May 6 at the 9:00 AM Mass. Students will prepare for the rite during class time at school, but parents will need to attend a meeting on Wednesday, April 25 at 7:15 PM. 
There will be a special school assembly honoring our First Communicants on Thursday, May 3 at 8:00 AM on the Front Yard.

Announcements for this Week:
Gateway to Art
Our Gateway to Art session last week was cancelled due to a family emergency for our docent. We will make up the project on a date to be determined.
SJS Talent Showcase
Auditions for the first annual SJS Talent Showcase will take place this week on Tuesday,  April 3 and Wednesday, April 4 at 3:15 PM in the Parish Hall. The performance will be held on Friday, May 4 at 7:00 PM.  
Operation Rice Bowl
The Lenten season calls us to three missions at this time of year: prayer, fasting, and almsgiving. Several children are getting involved by sacrificing a favorite treat and attending weekly Stations of the Cross presentations. Please encourage your children to participate by donating money to Operation Rice Bowl in the small boxes distributed at the beginning of Lent. Support us in our mission of children helping children and bring in your Rice Bowls for collection this week!
Holy Week
St. Jerome celebrates Holy Week with a series of traditions which culminate with the Triduum, three special days. On Holy Thursday, April 5, the living Stations of the Cross will be performed in the morning at school. Students will be dismissed at 12:30 PM on Thursday. There will also be a special Mass of the Lord’s Supper at 7:00 PM which you and your family are invited to attend. 
There will be no school on Good Friday, April 6, but there will be several special events going on at St. Jerome Church including an ecumenical procession and prayer service starting at 11:00 AM as well as opportunities to participate in the Liturgy of the Passion and Veneration of the Cross at 1:00 PM and 7:00 PM.
The Easter Vigil will take place on Saturday evening at 8:00 PM.
Morning Masses will be offered on Easter Sunday at 7:30, 9:00, and 11:00 AM.
Easter Vacation
Students will be dismissed at 12:30 PM on Holy Thursday, April 5. There will be NO SCHOOL on Good Friday, April 6. Easter Vacation will continue the next week through Monday, April 16. School will resume on Tuesday, April 17.

Families will need to prepare the First Communion banners by April 25, but we cannot get materials ready for you without help!
