Week of November 12 - 16

Announcements for this Week:

Family Dinner Night at Truxton’s
Please join us for a fundraiser at Truxton’s American Bistro on Tuesday, November 13! Bring your flyer and share extra copies with friends and family to support our school. Truxton’s will donate 15% of the proceeds of flyer sales to St. Jerome School!

Gateway to Art
Our next Gateway to Art session will take place on Thursday, November 15 at 1:00 PM. Please contact our docent, Mrs. Lugo, at rebecca-lugo@sbcglobal.net for volunteer info.

November Book Order
The Scholastic Book Order for November will be due on Friday, November 16.

Looking Ahead:

Thanksgiving Prayer Service
We will attend a Thanksgiving prayer service on Tuesday, November 20 at 11:00 AM. St. Jerome will gather as a school community to thank God for our many blessings and make an offering of canned goods from our Student Council Food Drive.

Thanksgiving Holiday
School will be closed Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday, November 21 - 23 in honor of  the Thanksgiving holiday. Enjoy this special time with family and friends!

First Trimester Report Cards
The first trimester will end on Tuesday, November 20. Report cards will be distributed on Tuesday, December 4 in the Family Envelopes.

Wild Animal Habitat Diorama
Animal Habitat Projects will be due on Monday, November 26. These projects should help students explore the relationship between an animal and its habitat through its unique adaptations. Projects should be shoebox-sized and may include mixed media. Please contact me or refer to your project guidelines if you have any questions!

Science Center Field Trip
We will be attending a field trip to the California Science Center Ecosystems exhibit on Wednesday, November 28. Students will be connecting their experiences on the trip with our reading, science, and social studies units on animals, landforms, and the complex interactions between living things and their environments. More information will be forthcoming regarding transportation arrangements and permission slips.

November Awards Assembly
The November Awards Assembly will take place on Thursday, November 29 at 8:00 AM.  Our Virtue Award recipients for the month will be honored at this assembly. The virtue of the month is Caring. Students are encouraged to show kindness, consideration, and a spirit of selflessness in their interactions with others at school.

Announcements for this Week:

Earthquake Kits
Please remember that emergency earthquake kits should be brought to school ASAP! We need to ensure that every student is prepared by having emergency supplies. Students should each have a gallon ziplock bag containing the following: water bottle, non-perishable snack, 3X5 card with contact information, note from mom and dad, and a photo of the student or the student with family.

Parent-Teacher Conferences
Parent-teacher conferences are scheduled for Monday through Thursday of this week. School will be dismissed at 12:30 PM each day. We will discuss work habits, classwork, upcoming report cards, ITBS scores, and any questions or concerns you may have. If you have still not signed up for a conference, please contact me as soon as possible.

Food Truck Night
Our next Food Truck Night will be held on Wednesday, November 7 at 6:00 PM!

School Holidays on Friday and Monday
There will be no school on Friday, November 9 due to faculty catechetical training.
School will also be closed on Monday, November 12 in honor of Veterans’ Day.

Announcements for this Week:

Earthquake Kits

October Awards Assembly
This month’s assembly has been re-scheduled for Wednesday, October 31 at 8:00 AM in the back yard. The Virtue Award winners for the month of October will be honored at this assembly. This month’s virtue is Responsibility. Students have been encouraged to make thoughtful choices, be honest about mistakes, solve problems using words, and take good care of their things.

Halloween Festivities
The St. Jerome Halloween Parade will take place immediately following the assembly on Wednesday, October 31 at 8:15 AM. Students will be permitted to wear costumes to school with the following guidelines:

-No Blood or Gore -No High Heels or Flip Flops
-No Play Weapons (Guns, Swords, Etc.) -No Bare Shoulders or Short Skirts

After the parade, students will return to the classrooms for fun seasonal activities. Please see the 2nd Grade Shutterfly page for volunteer and donation opportunities! Don’t forget that school will be dismissed at 12:30 PM on Halloween! Trick or treat!

All Saints’ Day Mass
Students will attend a special Mass on Thursday, November 1 at 8:00 AM in honor of the Feast of All Saints. This is a Holy Day of Obligation in the Catholic Church, and we will join with the parish community in celebrating the saints. Please make sure that students arrive at school at 7:45 AM on Thursday morning to ensure that we all make it to the church on time and safely. You are welcome to join us for this special Mass.

All Souls’ Day Mass
There will be another special school Mass hosted by the 4th grade class on Friday, November 2 at 11:00 AM. At this Mass, we will remember and pray for the faithful departed in our parish and school communities who have passed away this year. If you would like to have a loved one included in our prayers at Mass, please let me know. 

Political Awareness Night
Our evening of political presentations and discussion has been postponed to Friday, November 2 at 6:30 PM. The evening will feature student-created videos about the propositions on the ballot this month as well as presentations by speakers who will share a social justice perspective on the ballot measures. This is a great opportunity to teach students about a real way people can be Christian leaders for our world.

Parent-Teacher Conferences
Conferences will take place Monday - Thursday during the week of November 5 - 8. School will be dismissed at 12:30 PM each day during conference week, and there will be no school on Friday, November 9 due to a faculty inservice. Sign-up sheets for conference appointments will be posted in the hallway of Building A this week.

Veterans’ Day Holiday
There will be no school on Monday, November 12 in honor of Veterans’ Day.

Announcements for this Week:

Vision Testing
Students will have their vision tested at school on Wednesday, October 24. Any child who needs glasses for reading or daily use should have them at school for the test.

Food Truck Night
Our next Food Truck Night will take place on the evening of Wednesday, October 24. Join us between 6:00 - 9:00 PM for food, fun, and fellowship!

October Awards Assembly
This month’s assembly will be Thursday, October 25 at 8:00 AM in the front yard. Virtue Award winners for the month of October will be honored at this assembly. This month’s virtue is Responsibility. Students are encouraged to make thoughtful choices, be honest about mistakes, solve problems using words, and take care of their things.

Our Lady of the Rosary
There will be a special Mass on Friday, October 26 in honor of Our Lady of the Rosary. The Mass will begin at 11:00 AM and will take the place of our usual Friday Mass. The Mass will be sponsored by the 8th grade and will feature students sharing their experiences with praying the rosary. If children have their own set of rosary beads, they may bring them to school during the week of October 22 - 25 for religion class.

Pancake Breakfast
The 8th Grade Pancake Breakfast will be Sunday, October 28 after the 9:00 AM Mass. Come support the Class of 2013 and enjoy a delicious breakfast with the community.

Announcements for this Week:

The Great California Shake Out
St. Jerome will participate in this large-scale earthquake drill on Thursday, October 18. Remind your child about the earthquake drill procedure, “Drop, Cover, and Hold On”, and the importance of staying calm and following directions during any emergency.

Gateway to Art
The second graders will be enjoying their first Gateway to Art session of the year on Thursday, October 18 at 1:00 PM. If you are interested in volunteering, this can be a great way to get involved. Contact our docent, Mrs. Lugo, at rebecca-lugo@sbcglobal.net.

Breast Cancer Pink Out!
St. Jerome’s tribute to breast cancer awareness will take place on Friday, October 19. Pink shirts purchased through the fundraiser may be worn with non-uniform apparel. Students may also choose to wear their own pink tops, bottoms, and accessories with a $2.00 donation. Be sure to save an extra dollar or two for the bake sale at recess!

Yogurtland Fundraiser
The 2nd grade class will be hosting an all-day frozen yogurt fundraiser at Yogurtland in the Ladera Center on Saturday, October 20. Proceeds from the event will be dedicated to our classroom fund for field trips, supplies, and special events! Please help our class by making copies of the flyer and sharing it with friends, family, and neighbors.

Announcements for this Week:

Progress Reports
We are nearly halfway through the first trimester, and it may be time to begin thinking about providing students with a little extra academic support before report cards are distributed in November. Progress reports will be sent home this week to any students who may need a little extra help in a particular content area. Please contact me if you have any questions or concerns about your child’s academic progress.

Safe Moves Assembly
Students will be attending an assembly about traffic safety on Wednesday morning. The program will educate students about pedestrian, vehicle, and bicycle safety in an interactive way by navigating them through a “Safe Moves City”. Don’t forget to reinforce safety regulations with your child  in your home and on the road!

Food Truck Night
Our next St. Jerome Food Truck Night will be on Wednesday, October 10 from 6 - 9 PM!

Looking Ahead:

Church Picnic
You are invited to attend the St. Jerome Parish Picnic on Sunday, October 14 at the Playa Del Rey Lagoon. Mass will be celebrated at 10:00 AM, and the picnic will continue until 4:00 PM. There will be games, bouncers, and plenty of food and fun! The In-and-Out truck will be serving burgers, but parishioners MUST pre-register for tickets by signing up at http://tinyurl.com/stjeromepicnic2012

Make-Up Picture Day
Any students who were absent on Picture Day will be able to take their photos on Monday, October 15. Wear your dress uniform (not P.E. clothes) and a smile!

October Book Order
