Schedule Change for This Week!

Attention Parents!

It has just come to my attention that the administrators have decided to hold the April Awards Assembly on Wednesday, April 20 at 8:00 AM. This schedule change was made to avoid any potential conflict between the Awards Assembly and the performance of the Living Stations of the Cross.

Please adjust your calendars as necessary! Thank you for your understanding!

The Cardinal Manning Center has been providing services to the homeless population of Downtown Los Angeles for more than 50 years, and we can help them by providing simple items that we often take for granted - socks!

Anticipating Holy Week
There will be a special Mass this week as we gather as a school community to prepare for Holy Week. This Mass will take place on Thursday, April 14 at 11:15 AM. Remember that students should wear their regular dress uniforms for Mass. We will NOT have P.E. this Thursday, and P.E. uniforms should not be worn. Please note that this Mass will take the place of our usual Friday Mass for this week.

This will be the Mass at which I celebrate my initiation into the Church by taking part in the Sacraments of the Eucharist and Confirmation. Our class has been invited to participate in this Mass in a special way by performing in the choir. We would like to invite the 2nd Grade families to join us in this celebration!

Week of April 4 - 8

Announcements for this Week:

Tardy Policy
The updated Tardy Policy has gone into effect as of April 1. Please note the revision that THREE tardies will result in a Morning Detention to be served on the following Thursday morning at 7:10 AM. Remember that on Mass Days (every Friday, unless otherwise specified in the calendar), students should arrive at school by 7:45 AM.

I am quite pleased to report that last Friday, all 2nd graders arrived in a timely manner. Keep up the good work!

Fundraisers for Japan
This week, St. Jerome School, in conjunction with the Holy Childhood Association, will be sponsoring a series of fundraisers to benefit those who are still suffering from the aftermath of the earthquake and tsunami in Japan. Please note that the Pajamas for Japan Day has been modified to Jerseys for Japan. This event is still set to take place on Thursday, April 7. Students can donate $2.00 in exchange for the privilege of wearing a sports jersey with their regular uniforms pants. Our class will have P.E. on Thursday, so our students may wear jerseys with their P.E. shorts or sweatpants. Please make sure they are also wearing appropriate P.E. shoes.

Student Council has also planned a Bake Sale for Japan this week. Items will be available for sale at Recess and Lunch, so be sure to bring a dollar or two for a tasty treat. Maybe students can practice making change while they're selecting their favorite cookies, cakes, and pastries!

Lenten Confession
On Tuesday, April 5, our class will have the opportunity to meet with Father Samuel for the Sacrament of Penance and Reconciliation. Mrs. Heppell and I have been reviewing the Act of Contrition in class, but please be sure to follow up at home, not just practicing the words of the prayer but examining our consciences and thinking about why the Sacrament of Reconciliation is such an important part of Lent.

Race for Success
In your Family Envelope last Tuesday, you found some information about the annual Race for Success. It will take place on Saturday, May 21 at Loyola Marymount University in Westchester. This fundraiser has the potential to earn a lot of money for our school, and I encourage you all to sign up as runners, joggers, walkers, or even "virtual" participants. Please check out the website for more information and registration opportunities: Race for Success

As part of an effort to support and promote St. Jerome School at the Race for Success, families are being asked to donate $2.00 per child. There will be reward incentives for the class that raises the most money by Thursday, April 7. Please send in your $2.00 with the slip from Tuesday's flyer as soon as possible!

Sock Drive
Another opportunity for giving during the Lenten season will be a Sock Drive to benefit the Cardinal Manning Center of the Society of St. Vincent de Paul. The Cardinal Manning Center has been serving the homeless in the Skid Row Area of Downtown Los Angeles for over 50 years. The goal of the Center is to provide homeless men and women with children to stabilize their life circumstances and develop self-sufficiency. One of the ways they accomplish this goal is helping to provide homeless people with basic needs that we often take for granted...like clean socks! Students are asked to help by donating new pairs of men's, women's, and children's tube socks to the Cardinal Manning Center. The Sock Drive will continue through Friday, April 15.

This special Mass will take the place of our usual Friday Mass for that week.

On a personal note, this will be the Mass at which I take the next step in the RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults) process by celebrating my First Communion and Confirmation into the Church. I am very excited to be sharing these Sacraments with the school community at St. Jerome, and I would welcome any 2nd Grade families who may be able to attend the Mass next week. Thank you for walking with me on this faith journey!
