Announcements for this Week:
ITBS Testing
Testing begins on Monday morning and will continue throughout the week. Please refrain from scheduling appointments during the morning hours this week and make sure that students are arriving at school on time as testing will begin promptly at 8:00 am each morning. Please support me in encouraging students to try their best on each day of testing. My intention is not for the students to feel stressed or pressured to know everything on the test, but rather to use this opportunity to show what they know and how they think. Students should go into the test with a relaxed, confident attitude.
Feast of St. Jerome Mass
This Thursday, September 30, there will be a Special School Mass at 11:15am in honor of the Feast of St. Jerome. Please make sure that students wear their regular uniforms on this day (not P.E. uniforms). This Special Mass will take the place of our usual Friday Mass this week.
Scholastic Book Order
I have set up the parent online ordering page for our Scholastic Book Club. The Class Activation Code is: GVG4H. The paper copies of the order form were distributed on Friday for those of you who wish to order with a check. The book order for October is due on Monday, October 4 (so the books will arrive in time for Halloween).
Wish List
Please check out our Class Library Wish List on the Scholastic Book Clubs page! I have included lots of suggestions for great kid-friendly fiction and non-fiction books. Any of these would make great donations to the class for a birthday or holiday celebration!
Reading Logs
Reading Logs for the month of September are DUE on Friday, October 1. Please make sure that students have at least completed one side of the log with their comments. Since there will be no written homework this week for ITBS Testing, reading (independently or with an adult) will be the required assignment each night.
Our Star of the Week is: Xavier Reed
Looking Forward:
Progress Reports
Progress Reports will be distributed on Tuesday, October 5 only for students who may need extra support or effort in a particular content area.
Gradelink
I have updated Gradelink with all of the relevant assessment data for the past few weeks. In general, I am very pleased with the students' performance on these assessments. They are hard workers and extremely motivated to succeed. It has been a pleasure getting to know them, and I am excited to discover new ways to challenge them. Please contact with me if you need a reminder about your Gradelink log-in information.

Week of September 13 - 17
Dear 2nd Grade Families,
I'm so glad I was able to see so many of you at Back to School Night! I know there was a lot of information presented to you on Wednesday night, so please remember that you can always check the blog archives to review any class policies, class schedule information, and assignments.
Here is the update for this week:
Picture Day is this Wednesday, September 15!
Please remember that school uniforms should be worn on Picture Day this year.
Simple Solutions
This math program provides an efficient means to review and build basic math skills with daily practice. The faculty feels that participation in this program will really help improve our standardized test scores. During math this week, I noticed that several students were struggling with some basic addition facts that should ideally be committed to memory such as doubles facts (4+4, 7+7, 9+9, etc.) and ways to make 10 (5+5, 3+7, 6+4, etc.). Hopefully, Simple Solutions will help facilitate comfort and automaticity with these basic computational skills. The program cost is only $12.95 per student. Please submit payment this week, and let's continue practicing at school and at home.
ITBS Testing
Testing will take place during the weeks of September 27 - October 8 in the mornings. Please be on time and make sure students are arriving at school well-rested and fed. Homework will be minimal during the weeks of ITBS Testing.
Tardies
At Friday's Faculty Meeting, I was surprised and a bit disappointed to find that our class has the most students arriving at school late. Let's work to improve our punctuality. Students should arrive at school and be in line on the back yard at 7:55am. We are in our classroom and starting work at 8:00am. When students arrive late, they need extra time to copy their homework assignments, store their backpacks and lunchboxes, and complete their morning work. Late arrivals compromise valuable instructional time and can be distracting to the rest of the class. I know the drop-off lines can be a bit backed up in the mornings, so please leave home a few minutes early if necessary. Thank you for your cooperation in this matter.
